For this task, I had to get into a group of four with people from other courses to create an alternative tourist route for Edinburgh. The first thing our group did was brainstorm ideas for what would be the potential concept. When brainstorming we found that the one thing we all had in common was our love and appreciation of alcohol. The idea eventually developed and transformed into a quick pub crawl where there would be routes taking you along some of Edinburgh’s weirder and more unusual pubs and bars. As a group, we decided that making the crawl more interesting we would incorporate tasks and challenges that people may complete to make the whole experience more fun. After deciding on the bars and route for a trial run we headed out onto the route and invited friends along with us to make sure that the findings from the crawl were unbias and impartial. This meant that we could work on aspects of the crawl that may need improvement. After completing the route we decided that we could take the idea and refine it more and change it into a route of all Edinburgh hidden pubs and bars that even locals may never heard of or seen before. We decided that the best way for user interaction with this was an app as this would make it more accessible to more people as everyone has a phone nowadays. It also allows for a real-time map feature to help the users find the bars. this is a benefit as using a traditional map to find some of the places would be extremely difficult.
Landscape Collage
For this task, I had to create a collage of a landscape. This had to include 3 randomly chosen images. my images were The Falls of Clyde, The Bauhaus School, and an old-fashioned phone.
Pixel Portrait
This was a task due for my digital media class. the task was to create a portrait of my self only using a 16×16 grid and only using boxes like pixels![]()
Colour Wheel
For this task, I had to create my own personal colour wheel from objects I found in the world around me. I found this task interesting as it made me stop and think about the things around me and how they’ve been designed and the colours that they’ve used and the emotions they provoke.
Richard Hamilton Collage
In this task, I had to take inspiration from Richard Hamilton’s collages. In my collage, I have taken the concept of the wast problem we have in society and the blindness and the separation we have from it due to things that take us away from it or things that make us feel better about the things we do. the figure in the photo has a virtual reality headset on showing he isn’t even wanting to live in his own reality. There are also other items that show how they may be trying to make themselves feel better for the late they create like a solar panel, electric cans and being vegan. I have also made the collage so as your eye looks across the photo you see it getting worse and worse until eventually you look out the window and see the waste and destruction this has caused the environment.
Edinburgh
For the trip I started the trip at the National Museum of Scotland. So far I think that this is my favourite place we have visited. there was such a wide variety of different exhibitions to look at. the main exhibits that I was interested in where the exhibits on how science and design ave influenced each other. I have always been fascinated in the ways that these can interact with each there and help to influence eat there and better the future. there was one section that really interested me and that was the section on prosthetics and artificial body parts. This is a prime example of the top of design that interests me and what i would like to be doing when i leave university. The way that they prosthetics fit to the body and functioned was really interesting. there was other sections such as the ones on fashion was really interesting as it was intriguing to see the way that fashions has changed over the years and at some points come in circle back to a certain trend. After this i went to the nation gallery here photography was not allow which was disappointing and after the excitement of the national museum was sadly forgettable. i would have loved to have some photo references so i could look back and remember some of the exhibits i saw because there was some intriguing ones.
T Shape of influence
In this task I have shown my influences with my discipline of product design along the vertical and the other disciplines such as photography, graphic design and so on. This task was interesting as it forced me to look at who I was inspired by and how they have influenced the way I design today.
Glasgow Trip
Glasgow is a city known for its history and art. This is evident by the multitude of different museums and galleries that fill the city. My day started by visiting the Kelvingrove. I have been to the Kelvingrove multiple different times throughout my life and find it interesting how my interests have changed from the historical side of the museum to the gallery side of the museum. For all, I still find the museum fascinating I now find the way in which the animal replicas made more intriguing than the animals themselves. The one exhibit I really enjoyed was the one of Dutch realism with one painting really standing out. the use of perspective was truly fascinating and felt like you were engulfed in the painting and as if you were viewing it from the eyes of the artist standing looking. Overall I would say that this was my favorite out of the 3 museums I visited this day. Next was the lighthouse, I have never been and had high hopes which unfortunately were not met. what felt like a lack of exhibits contributed to this feeling of disappointment. the one redeeming quality of this museum was the exhibit on graphic art which was fascinating to see how graphic design and art has evolved over the years with the invention of different mediums to create designs and art. Finally, I visited GOMA. I had previously been and seen the exhibits but hadn’t seen the recent installments. the first floor was where I spent most of my time as id seen many previous exhibits before. The first floor created an atmosphere of ease and unrest mirrors the out there and gorilla art style that the GOMA is known for. it was interesting to see how simple films and noises could create such a feeling of unease. overall id says that this has been my favorite trip so far due to the variety that was seen throughout the day.
Tunning Out The World
Sometimes the outside world can be too much for some people. having the ability to just tune out the people and things around you is sometimes to have peace and be with yourself. The knops earplugs combat this problem. Traditional earplugs only allow for one level of noise cancelation which doesn’t work for everyone. sometimes you want to have loud higher end noises canceled but still be able to hear things closer to you. this is where the knops feature of an adjustable dial comes into play. this allows for variation of noise cancelation allowing you to allow more noise when you are talking to someone close and completely shutting out sound when you want to be by yourself. this is an effective design as it combats the struggles faced with traditional earplugs and revamps the design and gives it a sleeker and more elegant look.
Tiny Phones
Modern-day phones have drifted away from their original intent and function, to make phone calls. Whilst this may benefit the user some people want the plain basics and nothing more. In 2016 Punkt release the ‘Dumb Phone’ which was simply a phone that made calls and sent texts. The design was a hit and sold out quickly. Recently the Japanese company Kyocera release a simpler concept for a phone. The phone has a minimalistic look and appearance to it. Whilst it may have more functions than the ‘Dumb Phone’ the once feature that draws consumers to this phone is the fact it is only the size of a credit card. this makes the phone compact and easily stored when not in use unlike the mammoth sized phones of nowadays. This design is an interesting concept and is a welcome change to the newer smartphones of the modern day.
